Settled in 1809, Madison was a major river port and supply town outfitting pioneers moving into the Old Northwest Territory.
Madison's tradition of fine building created an architectural legacy that spawned a preservation movement in the 1960's and continues to evoke admiration for this significant historic community. Many of the Federal, Greek Revival, and Italianate commercial buildings were constructed before the Civil War.
Madison's entire Riverfront is park area with lighted walkways and cozy picnic spots, and also offers a campground overlooking the Ohio River. Recreation at the River includes fishing, boating and water sports. With more than 43,000 acres of public land to enjoy in Southeastern Indiana, there are truly always recreational activities for everyone, fishing and hunting, biking and basketball, pick your sport and enjoy.
